What Is IEM Cologne?
Cologne is one of the few CS events that still feels like a proper arena tournament. Once playoffs start it tightens up fast. Eight teams, full arena, every map matters.
By the time the Lanxess Arena opens on June 18 the field has already been cut from 32 teams to eight. The arena holds around 15,000 people and it fills for playoffs. If you have been before you know the difference between a group stage match and a Cologne semi.
ESL has confirmed a live orchestra for the opening ceremony, player profile videos and a second ESL x Counter-Strike merchandise collection. The biggest edition yet according to ESL themselves. Stage 3 also breaks new ground. For the first time, matches will be played in front of a live studio audience at the Palladium before the field moves to the Lanxess Arena for playoffs. The atmosphere starts before the main event.
Stage 1 Day 1 already peaked at over 450,000 viewers. Viewership usually climbs past a million once the bracket narrows. With how competitive 2026 has been, this one should peak well above that.
Format
Four stages, three weeks. Stages 1 through 3 use a Swiss system. Unlike a World Cup style bracket where you can map out every possible match from day one, Swiss is fluid. Your next opponent depends on your current record. Win three and you advance, lose three and you are out. Playoffs at Lanxess Arena are single elimination, best-of-three through quarters and semis, best-of-five grand final. All times CEST.
| Stage | Dates | Format | Venue |
| Stage 1 | June 2-5 | Swiss, Bo3 | Palladium |
| Stage 2 | June 6-9 | Swiss, Bo3 | Palladium |
| Stage 3 | June 11-15 | Swiss, Bo3 | Palladium |
| Quarterfinals | June 18-19 | Bo3 | Lanxess Arena |
| Semi-finals | June 20 | Bo3 | Lanxess Arena |
| Grand final | June 21 | Bo5 | Lanxess Arena |
Stage 3 is all Bo3 for the first time in Major history. That means every match is a proper series, best of three maps, rather than a single map shootout where one bad round can end your tournament.
Playoff Bracket
Eight teams are through to Lanxess Arena. The quarterfinals start Thursday June 19 and the grand final is Sunday June 21.
| Match | Teams | Date | Time (CEST) | Format |
| QF1 | Aurora vs BetBoom | Thursday June 18 | 15:45 | BO3 |
| QF2 | 9z vs FURIA | Thursday June 18 | 19:00 | BO3 |
| QF3 | G2 vs Spirit | Friday June 19 | 15:45 | BO3 |
| QF4 | Falcons vs Vitality | Friday June 19 | 19:00 | BO3 |
| SF1 | QF1 winner vs QF2 winner | Saturday June 20 | 15:45 | BO3 |
| SF2 | QF3 winner vs QF4 winner | Saturday June 20 | 19:00 | BO3 |
| Grand Final | TBD vs TBD | Sunday June 21 | 17:00 | BO5 |
The headline matchup is Falcons vs Vitality on Friday. If both win their semis, a Vitality vs Spirit grand final is the outcome most of the CS2 community is expecting.
Teams
Stage 3 Direct Invites: Team Vitality, Natus Vincere, FURIA Esports, Team Falcons, The MongolZ, MOUZ, PARIVISION, Aurora
Stage 2: Team Spirit, Astralis, G2 Esports, FUT Esports, Legacy, 9z Team, paiN Gaming, Monte
Stage 1: Team Liquid, HEROIC, BIG, NRG Esports, B8, BetBoom Team, M80, SINNERS Esports, MIBR, TYLOO, Lynn Vision Gaming, Gaimin Gladiators, Sharks Esports, FlyQuest, THUNDER dOWNUNDER, GamerLegion
The higher your seed, the later you enter. The top 8 teams skip straight to Stage 3. Seeds 9-16 start at Stage 2. Everyone else begins at Stage 1 and needs to win through all three rounds to reach the playoffs.
The massive storyline heading into the tournament is the complete absence of the FaZe Clan banner. After failing to qualify through the Valve Regional Standings, the organisation misses its first Major ever. Their legendary core did not disappear though. karrigan, NiKo and m0NESY are competing at Cologne, just under the Team Falcons tag instead.
The eight teams confirmed for the playoffs are Team Vitality, Team Spirit, FURIA, Team Falcons, G2 Esports, Aurora, BetBoom and 9z. NAVI, MongolZ, MOUZ and the remaining Stage 3 teams have been eliminated.

How It Played Out
Team Falcons were the wildcard going into playoffs and they proved it emphatically. They beat Vitality 2-1 in the quarterfinals, swept Spirit 2-0 in the semis and then destroyed FURIA 3-0 in the grand final to claim their first ever Major title.
m0NESY was awarded the MVP after a tournament-defining performance. karrigan, whose quote going into the final was "here I am, playing my worst CS ever, and somehow in a Major final," won his first Major title at 32 years old.
Vitality, the heavy pre-tournament favourites going for a historic three-peat, were eliminated by Falcons in the quarterfinals. Spirit, considered their biggest rival, fell to Falcons in the semis. The two teams most expected to contest the final were both knocked out by the same roster.
FURIA were the feel-good story of the tournament, beating 9z, Aurora and Spirit on their run to the final before running into a Falcons side that was simply unstoppable by that point. Aurora's run to the semi-finals was the biggest surprise of the playoffs, the highest ever Major placement for a Turkish CS roster.
NAVI did not make the playoffs, finishing 9th-11th after losing to Spirit, Falcons and G2 in Stage 3. Their first Major playoff absence since Shanghai.
