IEM Cologne Major 2026: Can Vitality Complete the three-peat?

Updated June 8, 2026 7 MIN READ

The Cathedral of Counter-Strike is back for IEM Cologne Major 2026. IEM Cologne returns as a Major for the first time since 2016. Now in its fourth edition as a Valve-sponsored championship, 32 teams are fighting for $1,250,000 across three weeks of competition. Playoffs hit the Lanxess Arena June 18–21.

What Is IEM Cologne?

Cologne is one of the few CS events that still feels like a proper arena tournament. Once playoffs start it tightens up fast. Eight teams, full arena, every map matters.

By the time the Lanxess Arena opens on June 18 the field has already been cut from 32 teams to eight. The arena holds around 15,000 people and it fills for playoffs. If you have been before you know the difference between a group stage match and a Cologne semi.

ESL has confirmed a live orchestra for the opening ceremony, player profile videos and a second ESL x Counter-Strike merchandise collection. The biggest edition yet according to ESL themselves. Stage 3 also breaks new ground. For the first time, matches will be played in front of a live studio audience at the Palladium before the field moves to the Lanxess Arena for playoffs. The atmosphere starts before the main event.

Stage 1 Day 1 already peaked at over 450,000 viewers. Viewership usually climbs past a million once the bracket narrows. With how competitive 2026 has been, this one should peak well above that.

Format

Four stages, three weeks. Stages 1 through 3 use a Swiss system. Unlike a World Cup style bracket where you can map out every possible match from day one, Swiss is fluid. Your next opponent depends on your current record. Win three and you advance, lose three and you are out. Playoffs at Lanxess Arena are single elimination, best-of-three through quarters and semis, best-of-five grand final. All times CEST.

Stage 3 is all Bo3 for the first time in Major history. That means every match is a proper series, best of three maps, rather than a single map shootout where one bad round can end your tournament.

Teams

Stage 3 Direct Invites: Team Vitality, Natus Vincere, FURIA Esports, Team Falcons, The MongolZ, MOUZ, PARIVISION, Aurora

Stage 2: Team Spirit, Astralis, G2 Esports, FUT Esports, Legacy, 9z Team, paiN Gaming, Monte

Stage 1: Team Liquid, HEROIC, BIG, NRG Esports, B8, BetBoom Team, M80, SINNERS Esports, MIBR, TYLOO, Lynn Vision Gaming, Gaimin Gladiators, Sharks Esports, FlyQuest, THUNDER dOWNUNDER, GamerLegion

The higher your seed, the later you enter. The top 8 teams skip straight to Stage 3. Seeds 9-16 start at Stage 2. Everyone else begins at Stage 1 and needs to win through all three rounds to reach the playoffs.

The massive storyline heading into the tournament is the complete absence of the FaZe Clan banner. After failing to qualify through the Valve Regional Standings, the organisation misses its first Major ever. Their legendary core did not disappear though. karrigan, NiKo and m0NESY are competing at Cologne, just under the Team Falcons tag instead.

Who's Going to Win

Team Vitality enter as heavy favourites. They won back-to-back Majors at Austin 2025 and Budapest 2025, then completed their second ESL Grand Slam at IEM Rio 2026. That made them only the second organisation ever to win two ESL Grand Slams, another sign of how dominant this roster has become. Going for three consecutive Majors would match Astralis's legendary 2018-2019 record. Their roster of ZywOo, ropz, flameZ, mezii and apEX is as deep as it gets right now.

Team Spirit are the biggest threat. donk and sh1ro form the best player duo outside Vitality. Despite being seeded into Stage 2, Spirit have beaten Vitality before.

Falcons might be the most interesting team in the tournament. On paper they have the firepower to win the whole thing, but consistency has been the issue. If NiKo, m0NESY and company hit form at the right time, nobody wants them on the other side of the bracket.

The MongolZ are another dangerous team. They've gone from fan-favourite underdogs to genuine playoff contenders and won't be intimidated by the stage. A deep run wouldn't shock anyone at this point.

NAVI and MOUZ shouldn't be overlooked either. Neither sits in the Vitality-Spirit tier right now, but both have enough quality to punish any mistake. With FaZe absent, the bracket feels more open than usual and a surprise finalist wouldn't be a shock.

Where to Watch

All matches live on ESL's Counter-Strike channels on YouTube, Twitch and Kick. Stage 1 Day 1 peaked at over 450,000 viewers. Likely to climb past a million once the bracket hits Lanxess Arena.
