Australian sports betting syndicate Worldwide Sporting Investments has been forced into court-ordered liquidation owing more than AU$2 million to creditors, with less than AU$1,000 remaining in its accounts.
Owner Tyler Roberts ran the syndicate by pooling funds from investors and placing bets through online bookmakers. Betting activity has also expanded into areas such as World Cup prediction markets, where participants trade positions linked to tournament outcomes. The collapse followed a chaotic chain of events that began in April 2025 when Roberts and his girlfriend were allegedly kidnapped on the Sunshine Coast by members of the Alameddine crime network, a Sydney-based organised crime group linked to drug trafficking and violent extortion. Police said Roberts had raised approximately AU$3.1 million from individuals connected to the same network. He claims a former business associate disappeared with the funds, a claim police have not confirmed. The story adds another serious development to sports betting streams, where betting businesses, operators and market activity remain closely followed.
Among the legitimate creditors owed money are David Baldwin, who is owed nearly AU$800,000, and Ryan Mark Strauss, who is owed more than AU$400,000. Liquidators have warned that the chances of recovering meaningful funds are slim. Roberts does not appear to be facing criminal charges at this time.
