Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in extra time on July 19, with Ferran Torres scoring in the 106th minute to secure their second World Cup title. Spain outshot Argentina 20 to 2 and kept the ball for 60% of the match. Off the pitch, the betting numbers were even bigger.
The Spain vs Argentina final was the biggest soccer betting event in Caesars Sportsbook history, breaking every previous record for total handle, total wagers and unique bettors. Caesars Sports head of trading Mark Bickerdike said pre-match wagering alone surpassed every previous tournament record before a ball had been kicked. Analysts had projected $5-10 billion in prediction market volume before the tournament began. The final numbers made that look conservative.
The Numbers Behind the Tournament
US legal sportsbooks processed between $2.82 billion and $4.3 billion in total handle across the tournament's 104 matches, according to gaming research firm Eilers and Krejcik. That represents a ninefold increase from the estimated $490 million wagered on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. DraftKings reported handle running at approximately five times its 2022 levels. FanDuel and BetMGM each described the tournament as record-breaking across their entire customer bases.
The jump is partly structural. Legal mobile sports betting is now available in 39 US states, up from 19 in 2022. The 48-team format produced 104 matches instead of 64. And hosting the tournament in North America meant primetime kickoffs rather than early-morning alarms, which suppressed wagering on European-hosted competitions.
Globally, total World Cup wagering exceeded $50 billion according to H2 Gambling Capital, a 43% increase from 2022.
Prediction Markets Took a Record Share
Just as important as how much was bet was where it went. Prediction market platforms Kalshi, Polymarket and Robinhood's Rothera combined for record monthly volume as the tournament ran. Kalshi alone posted $31 billion in June trading volume, a 70% increase from May, with daily active users growing 36% between June 15 and June 30.
Kalshi and Polymarket combined captured 78.5% of betting app downloads in June, up from just 6% a year earlier. Traditional sportsbooks including DraftKings and FanDuel saw between 36% and 41% drops from their early tournament peaks in the same window as prediction market platforms absorbed a growing share of first-time bettors, particularly among women and younger demographics who had never used a standard sportsbook.
What the Final Delivered
The Spain vs Argentina final outdid every previous record set during the tournament. Caesars confirmed it was their biggest soccer event ever by handle, wagers and unique bettors. The match had been set up as a dream final on paper, with FIFA's top two ranked nations meeting at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, and bettors treated it that way.
Spain entered as slight favourites at +125 to win in regulation. Argentina, the defending champions, were listed at +260. The draw at +195 was widely considered the most likely 90-minute outcome and the penalty shootout was the favoured method of victory prop at +330. In the end none of those landed. Torres' extra-time finish settled it, and the bettors who backed Spain to lift the trophy at -160 were the ones smiling at full time.
